MALAWI, AFRICA
MALAWI, officially known as the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa. It shares its borders with Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique. Lilongwe, the capital and the most populated city in Malawi, is located in the central region and offers beautiful scenic landscapes and culture with plenty of wildlife reserves. Covering for more than 1/5 of the country's total area, Lake Malawi is important for biodiversity conservation due to over 700 species of fish diversity. It is one of the deepest lakes in the world and serves to provide water, transportation, electricity, irrigation, and fish.
According to UNESCO, "...Malawi has a total of 4.5m students enrolled in primary and secondary school. Of these students, about 83% are enrolled in primary school. In Malawi, 11% of children of official primary school ages are out of school, with poorer children most likely to fall into this category. Based on educational attainment of 15-24 year old, 5% received no education, 57% failed to complete primary school, 19% attained secondary school but failed to complete their secondary education 7% completed secondary education and 1% studied beyond secondary level."
With 70.3% of the population living on less than $1.90 a day, the Republic of Malawi is ranked among the world's least developed and as one of the poorest nations. Like many poor countries, Malawians heavily depend on agriculture and subsistence farming accounting for 71.9% of total employment.
Malawi continues to struggle to contain the spread of HIV. About one in every 9.2 Malawian between the ages of 15 and 49 are HIV positive and according to the BBC, more than a million children living in the country have been orphaned by the disease.
Despite many challenges, Malawi is known as "The Warm Heart of Africa" because of the kindness and friendliness of the people.
